Tree pruning course for half and standard fruit trees (winter)

Fruit trees offer a culinary enrichment for many garden owners, provide shade and ensure a cool environment. But they can do much more. Native tree species in particular offer a large number of animals an ideal habitat. The flowers provide food for pollinating insects, birds breed in the branches or in tree cavities, and piles of leaves left behind serve as shelter for hedgehogs and beetles in winter. They also magically attract many animal species as dead wood, such as dead branches and twigs. An old stock of trees and small structures made of hedges, dead wood and flowering plant species are particularly valuable for nature.

Why is pruning so important?

Trees are essential for the climate because they absorb CO2 up, turning it into carbon and releasing oxygen. In this way, they help to keep temperatures on earth stable and make an important contribution to climate protection.

A proper pruning not only helps to create a beautiful shape, but also ensures that the tree remains healthy and stable. The older a tree gets, the more brittle the branches become. But even with young trees, proper care is important. Habitat is kept healthy through regular pruning measures.

WOERLE Farmers as active living space designers

Because the interest among WOERLE farmers is so great, we have decided to start our summer pruning course in July 2021 (find out more on our blog "Tree pruning course for half and standard fruit trees (summer)“ as part of the federal, state and EU-funded project “We build (r) n for diversity”, together with the ÖKL and have now followed us as project partners with a practical workshop for winter pruning.

Despite the freezing temperatures, master gardener Franz Hönegger from Friedburg taught us how to plant a tree professionally, the most important basics for pruning a fruit tree and the generally applicable laws of growth and pruning. In the practical part, the planting, training and rejuvenation pruning was shown and tried out for yourself. Many thanks to our speakers for the exciting practical workshop!
