Our project "1.000 life rafts for biodiversity"

Protect natural areas for insects and preserve diversity. In 2019, WOERLE launched the flagship project "Biodiversity in Farmers' Hands" together with their farming families. Companies, farmers and external experts work together with the regional population to counteract the dramatic decline in native animal and plant species. Since 2020, we have increasingly involved consumers in our project and have launched the "1.000 Liferafts for Biodiversity".

What are life rafts and why are they so important?

Life rafts are habitats and retreats for many different valuable plant and animal species. Insects and the like fulfill important ecological functions. On the one hand, they pollinate plants and are therefore incredibly valuable, as this ensures our human nutrition, among other things, and on the other hand, insects serve as a food source for many other animals such as reptiles or birds. Small insects in particular can sometimes only cover short distances and therefore need life rafts, in the sense of various closely networked habitats, in order to be able to cover these distances.

What have we achieved so far?

We are pleased to inform you that since the start of the project we have 530 islands reported and included in our digital map. 2/3 of the islands come from ours WOERLE farmers and 1/3 of the islands from the Population.

In doing so, we not only make existing semi-natural habitats in the region visible and not only want to raise public awareness of the diverse services and the importance of biodiversity, but also make the connection between management and biodiversity understandable.

Because of this, together with our WOERLE farmers and the population, especially in Flachgau and Mondseeland, we want to look for, preserve and create at least "2030 life rafts for biodiversity" by 1.000 and thus become the largest agriculturally used biodiversity region in Austria.

We would be happy if you would also support our project by registering your life raft in 2022.

Did you know…

...you can also help save biodiversity in autumn and winter by creating a life raft? This is how you protect plants and animals, offer important shelter and suitable winter quarters:

  • Scatter early flowering bulbs around the garden
  • Leave withered flowers and plant stems
  • Do without leaf vacuums and blowers
  • Leave dead wood and build piles of brushwood
  • Leave autumn leaves
  • Only mow flower meadows in spring
  • Hang up (self-made) nesting aids
