Practical workshop "Wild plants in grassland"
Local wild herbs, herbs and spices are not only culinary enrichments for our palates, but also play an important role in the nutrition of our cows. But how do you recognize them and how are they promoted?
The variety of wild herbs: healthy variety in the cowshed
Wild herbs are a valuable addition to animal feed. Not only do they impart an aromatic variety and improve the taste, but they are also rich in important nutrients such as vitamins, minerals and trace elements. This diverse range of nutrients contributes to the health and well-being of the cows. The variety of aromas of the wild herbs, herbs and spices not only increases the attractiveness of the feed, but also has a positive effect on the eating behavior of the cows. A varied diet with different types of plants promotes feed intake and keeps the animals busy.
What can we do?
The protection of natural habitats such as meadows, forests and riparian areas where wild herbs grow is crucial. Avoiding the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers and maintaining intact ecosystems are important measures. In order to promote biodiversity, it is important to cultivate a variety of plant species and support natural plant communities. The planting of flower strips, hedges and wildflower meadows creates habitats for wild herbs. Sustainable management of pastures includes the integration of native wild herbs through extensive grazing and moderate fertilization. This allows the herbs to multiply naturally and serve as a valuable food source for cows.

The WOERLE farmers as active living space designers
As part of the ÖKL project "We builders for diversity", funded by the federal government, the federal states and the EU, in which WOERLE is a project partner, speaker, organic hay milk farmer and trained herbalist Resy Strasser from the Korndoblerhof went with all participants :innen to the edge of the hay meadows and showed in the morning how and how to recognize the different wild plants, what uses they have and what habitats they need. The fact that our sensory organs also play a decisive role in exploring and enjoying herbs could be tested during the subsequent processing, cooking and enjoying of the edible wild herbs. We thank Resy for the valuable insights and the inspiring ideas that the speaker gave us along the way.
