Upcycling craft idea from our centerpiece packaging trays

With the arrival of the dark season, the time of lights returns, be it for autumnal decorations or as lanterns for the St. Martin's Day parade. And of course these are best homemade!

It's even better if you can make them from old packaging materials. Here is a creative upcycling craft idea for a lantern made from our centerpiece packaging trays.

Why do we carry a lantern?

On St. Martin's Day we remember that it is important to share and help those who are weaker. One man who was particularly good at this was Saint Martin.
On the anniversary of his death, November 11th, people marched through the streets with torches and lanterns. This tradition still exists today and so in autumn we parade through the streets with our handmade lanterns and sing cheerful lantern songs.

St. Martin’s lantern “Hedgehog”

Recommended age: from 4 years (with slight assistance)

Duration: up to 1 hour

What is needed:

  • WOERLE centerpiece packaging (deep version of the 420g piece)
  • Construction paper (brown, yellow or orange)
  • Tracing paper (brown, yellow or orange)
  • Glue stick or hot glue
  • scissors
  • Pencils
  • Brushes and acrylic paints
  • Lantern stick and LED tea light
  • Wire

That's how it works:

After you have enjoyed the delicious WOERLE cheese, carefully clean the centerpiece packaging and let it dry thoroughly. Then cut two large openings in the front of the packaging tray. In the same way, two small openings are cut out on the top of the packaging for the lantern and the stick.

Paint the outer packaging with brown, yellow, or orange acrylic paint and let it dry. Cut out two moon-shaped pieces of tracing paper for the two openings in the package. Carefully stick the two semicircles inside the lantern and let them dry thoroughly.

Then sketch and cut out a hedgehog template twice from brown construction paper. Also draw a hedgehog head twice on yellow or orange paper and cut it out. Here you can either draw the mouth, nose and eyes directly or cut them out separately from construction paper and glue them on. You can now decorate the hedgehog with dried autumn leaves or colored pencils to give it a special touch.

Finally, the two packaging trays are glued together. Then attach the lantern stick with the LED tea light inside the bowl using a wire and your hedgehog lantern is ready.
